Being a single mother isn’t just a role it’s a calling, a sacrifice, and an ever-evolving journey. Let me start by saying that this isn’t a story exclusive to single mothers. Many can relate to the feeling of being overwhelmed, undervalued, and at times, utterly lost. But this is my story. These are my challenges.
I’ll admit, I once kept myself last on the list, pouring everything I had into my daughters. It wasn’t intentional I wanted to give them the best of me, even if it left me with nothing. But as I walked through life’s phases and stages, I realized something: I was becoming a different person for each of my daughters, redefining myself in every season as I grew alongside them.
The Weight of It All
Life as a single mom has its unique struggles. Sometimes we start low financially, emotionally, or spiritually but our ambition, God’s grace, and the support of a community can lift us to heights we never imagined. Yet, the path isn’t without pain:
Relationship Hurt: Trust broken by those we once believed in. Carrying the weight of disappointment while trying to stay strong for the children watching us.
Disciplining Kids: Balancing love and authority, often questioning if we’re doing enough or too much. Trying to instill values without a consistent partner to share the load.
Friendships: Losing some, holding tight to others, and navigating loneliness when no one seems to truly understand.
Trust: Learning to trust again—not just others, but yourself. Trusting God in the moments when you feel abandoned or unsure of what’s next.
The Turning Point
For me, the turning point came when I realized I couldn’t pour from an empty cup. It started with me. I had to rediscover who I was beyond the labels of “mom” or “provider.” I had to give myself back my choice the choice to love myself, prioritize my well-being, and trust God at the center of it all.
Tools That Helped Me Along the Journey
Journaling: Writing became my way of releasing emotions I couldn’t always express. It was my quiet therapy.
Community Support: Surrounding myself with people who genuinely cared and could pour into me when I felt empty.
Prayer and Scripture: One verse that carried me through was "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." —Isaiah 40:31
